The name "Puirt a Baroque" is a play on puirt a beul, Scottish Gaelic for mouth-music. So, Puirt a baroque means "tunes from the baroque". The group played crossover arrangements of Scottish traditional music and Baroque art music.
Puirt a Baroque's repertoire includes works by major art-music composers, lesser-known Scottish art-music and traditional-style composers, and 20th-century Cape Breton composers. The group's innovative crossover pieces blended these musical styles affectionately, with respect for the integrity of each.
Return of the Wanderer , the band's first recording with vocals, was released in 1998 and received a Juno Award nomination in 1999 for Best Roots & Traditional Album: Group. Their 1996 debut recording Bach Meets Cape Breton won an East Coast Music Award in 1997 for Best Classical Album, and was nominated for two others including Album of the Year.
Puirt a Baroque's recordings are on the Marquis Classics label. They are distributed in Canada by EMI and in the United States by Allegro.
