Born in Beirut in 1978, Jawad Nawfal undertook audiovisual and film studies at IESAV (Institute for Scenic, Audiovisual and Film Studies) in Beirut and chose to specialize in sound design. In 2001, Jawad formed Altered Ear, a laboratory of sound research and composition, based on the need to explore and link several means of computer assisted musical writing. Altered Ear would like to be an encounter platform of multimedia disciplines, and is actually growing interested in the meeting of sound and image through the mediation of computer science. The Altered Ear platform divided since into three groups named Aequo, AEX and Munma. Aequo approaches music composition from an experimental perspective, whereby using unusual time signatures as well as diversified recording techniques and composition tools. As for AEX, it focuses on live and dance floor sets and realizes musical performances for a wider audience. Its musical influences encompass electro, techno, electronica, hip hop and breakbeat. Munma is Nawfal's latest musical project. It explores oriental harmonies and rythmics.
