Musical Biography Having trained both in Arabic and Persian musics after earlier studying composition and performance of jazz and experimental music, Kamran now directs the greater part of his musical interests to to composition of soundtracks for cinema works. In addition to scoring several short films, he has composed the soundtracks to the following feature length works: Salt of This Sea, (dir. Annemarie Jacir, 2009), Until When (dir. Dahna AbouRahme, 2001), Hopefully for the Best (Raed al-Helou, 2004), and Whose Children Are These (dir. Theresa Thanjan, 2005). Brief Biography Kamran Rastegar is Assistant Professor of Arabic in the Department of German, Russian and Asian Languages and Literatures and a member of the faculty of the International Letters and Visual Cultures program at Tufts University. He completed a PhD in 2005 from Columbia University, awarded jointly in Comparative Literature and Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures, and has held prior appointments at Brown University and the University of Edinburgh, teaching comparative literature, Arabic and Persian literatures, and postcolonial and world cinema courses. He is currently in Beirut on research leave, as a visiting associate in the English Department at the American University in Beirut; visiting professor teaching postcolonial cinema at the Ashkal Alwan Homeworks Studio program. Current research interests: Arab and Iranian cinemas. Cinema and memory in postcolonial contexts of war and social conflict. 19th and early 20th century Arabic and Persian literatures, with a focus on the conceptualization of cultural modernity through tropes of rebirth and revitalization as developed by emergent social and cultural institutions.
