Heavily influenced by intuitive processes in composing, Kalx is a fusion of meditative beauty and the metallic rush of a technological landscape. Originally creating and uploading ambient soundscapes to a Belgian FTP server, Kalx immersed himself in a culture marked by long distance collaboration and intense electronic and visual experimentation. The work of this period eventually led to his discovery by the Quebec-based NoType MP3 label, one of the first of its kind and home to musicians as diverse and talented as minimalist Tomas Jirku and beatpunk pioneer Books on Tape. During this period, Kalx developed a reputation for playfully mysterious behavior. MP3 releases could be deleted without warning. Tracks released on a Tuesday could be replaced with completely different compositions with the same names on Thursday. Far from alienating fans, these antics showed the artist was willing to play with the freedoms within the rising mp3 scene. In the meantime, his website, kalx.com, was the subject of increasing attention among artists, even spawning a series of sine-wave compositions from a completely independent artist. Signed to Zenapolae records at the start of the new millennium, his work was featured on a compilation disk, marking his first physical release. His work on this album was described as a standout by Mute Magazine, saying, "Kalx creates some of the most breathtakingly beautiful beat-driven ambient pieces this person has managed to encounter in a long time." Numerous compilation appearances followed under various monikers. In 2005, the Nophi label released a CD-R version of 10162003. Igloo magazine described this album as "nudg[ing] shoulders with glitchtronic mainstays like Larvae, Autechre, and Beefcake while stealing from none." Read more on Last.fm.
