Kevin Kali Hammonds never panics when he spits (on the track Rockstarrs), on the contrary, the kid revels with a Microphone in his hands. The Southern California Rapper by way of Massachusetts has a un canny ability to draw people in with his music. His message and delivery resonates the same euphoric energy heard in the late Bigge and Tupac’s records.
Kali’s first professional appearance came on the B-side of The Power Move by Big Mike in 1999, the song was Rule the Nation it sparked a deep connection with fans across the country immediately generating massive street appeal.
Withal the acclaim received by this feature, Kali was highly recruited on collaborations, compilations and called upon to open for a number of marquee rap crews on tour including G-Unit, Roc-a-fella, DBlock, and Diplomats.
In recent past, Kali was featured on the critically acclaimed 100 Proof (The Hangover) by Statik Selektah where fans favored his cut Walking Away." He also recently dropped two mixtapes The Coast Mixtape and Timelesswith heavyweight DJ's across the country Clinton Sparks, Statik Selektah and DJ Ill Will. Both projects have original production from Statik Selektah, Sandro, Cinema , Push Keys and included features from Evidence, Fashawn, Novel, Reks, and Termanology.
What's more, Rockstar Games made Kali's song Rollin Down the Freeway featuring Mistah Fab, Glasses Malone and Termanology the promotional theme for the Midnight Club Los Angeles: South Central video game series. Positive response from fans and gamers alike has been astounding, so much so, that LA's The Beat 93.5 and Power 106 has picked up the single for its mix show rotation.
In the midst of specialty projects and touring, Kali took time out to craft the Cali Kali EP with Statik Selektah. This latest exploit showcases the rappers rhyme acumen everything from classic braggadocio (RockStarr) to a cool laid back vibe (Be Quiet). The record strays from the familiar, lacking gimmicks and silly dance songs; but rather, witty lyrics, relentless punch lines, and introspective declarations with hard beats to match.
Most songs found on his mixtapes and new EP center on growing up amid violence and hardship in ghettos, racism, social inequality and injustice, unbridled aggression, compassion, playfulness, and hope, themes not only expressed in his art, but dictated in his life.
"I want to make music that allows my fans to feel my experiences at the time,” Kali explains of Cali Kali. “Life is full of struggles but it’s also fun, exciting, and thrilling, so you hear that in my music—I Love the ironies that balance out life that’s what I capture and dissect in my bars."
