NY-based hard rock band formed in 1985 by guitarist Jimmy "Mack" Makowski and drummer David Leeds. The band released a three-song EP in 1986, and a full-length recording entitled 'Go For Your Guns' followed the next year. After various lineup changes, singer Billy Kohout joined in 1988 and the group released another EP, 'Partners In Crime'. This recording featured the radio singles "Shy Boy" and "One Track Mind" and gave Grimm Jack national attention with regular features in CIRCUS, HIT PARADER and other prominent publications. By 1990 the band was one of the hottest items on the east coast music scene, and had earned a solid reputation as a live act. The release of 'Jailhouse Tattoo' that year gave Grimm Jack their biggest radio hit, a southern bluesy-style tune called "Maybelline." JAILHOUSE TATTOO sold a respectable amount , and the group was voted "Band Of The Year" by EAST COAST ROCKER magazine. In 1991 the band signed a preliminary deal with a major label and spent several months recording new material. After re-recording and remixing, the final product was submitted to the label for approval, but put on hold for nearly half a year. The label eventually decided to withdraw from pursuing the project any further due to the rapid changes in the music scene. By then the "grunge invasion" was in full force and straight-ahead rock bands like Grimm Jack were quickly losing ground. The band continued recording and performing until the mid-1990's, when it was decided to give the name a rest until another day. In late 2009 Grimm Jack founder Jimmy "Mack" Makowski and singer Billy Kohout decided to release music recorded by Grimm Jack from 1988 to 1991 that had never been made public. It wasn't long until a full band reunion was a reality, with all members from Grimm Jack's JAILHOUSE TATTOO days reunited, with the exception of bassist Paul Vassa. Replacing the band's longtime bassist is noted Long Island player George Banas. Aside from newcomer Banas, Grimm Jack currently features original guitarist Jimmy "Mack" Makowski, drummer David Leeds, singer Billy Kohout and guitarist Tom "Lestat" Collier. In April 2010 the band reissued their 1988 PARTNERS IN CRIME recording on compact disc for the first time, and included in the package are seven tracks recorded in 1988 that were previously unreleased. The band's biggest seller to date, JAILHOUSE TATTOO from 1990 has been remastered and will be reissued in the summer of 2010, and the band is currently writing and recording new material for future release.
