General Tornado and The Unicorn Platoon is a semi-virtual band from Middlesbrough, England. The band was created by the sole member Phillip Gray, 23, as part of his university dissertation entitled: “Virtual Musicians: Human After All?” Gray explored the imagery, performance and personas of contemporary music artists from The Beatles and Sgt. Pepper, to Deadmau5, Gorillaz, Alvin and The Chipmunks and Daft Punk. The structure of General Tornado and The Unicorn Platoon differs from traditional groups as two of the members are “virtual” i.e. they don’t exist in reality which adds ambiguity and creates a new dimension to the concept.
