http://www.drewdanburry.com/ Having emerged in 2004 with the promising “An Introduction to Sex Rock,” Danburry nearly made his first release obsolete the following year when he released “Besides: Are We Just Playing Around Out Here or Do We Mean What We Say?” It was, I kid you not, leaps and bounds more sonically advanced than his first stab at megastardom — and, to boot, the tunes were as expertly crafted as the batch on his debut. And, since the new album is not yet complete, “Live in France!” (recorded with a makeshift “band” dubbed “Fatal Fury and the Lasercats!”) more or less serves as a reminder of how this beloved singer/songwriter built such a devoted fan base. More than that, though, the album is a testament to his ride-or-die DIY aesthetic, which has kept him on the road since day one … and yet somehow he managed to record and release this all on his dollar. What’s more impressive is the material that composes “France!” As stated in the liner notes, it was recorded in two very different French locations last fall. The first half, which features a heartwarming (attempted) sing-along of his early classic “I Am a Normal Healthy Person Which Means I Have Lots of Problems,” was recorded in a crowded Paris coffeehouse. The second half is more evident of Danburry’s decidedly quirky demeanor: It was recorded in some family’s backyard — outfitted, no less, with manicured lawns and a big ol’ trampoline. While the sound isn’t as crisp as the first half, it provides — as lame as it sounds — an intimate window into his world.
