Biography:
The trio from the Chiemgau region in Upper Bavaria took its name from jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt and his “Gypsy swing,” a nod to their own musical roots with violin, acoustic guitar, and double bass. In 2011 they uploaded a video of their song Heidi (music: Starflinger, lyrics: Astl) to YouTube and quickly attracted wide attention. They signed a record deal with Seven Days Music and released their debut album under the band name Django 3000 in March 2012. With it, they placed both themselves and their Bavarian “Balkan beat” in the German album charts. Around the release of the first album, Lorenz “Astl” Schmid left the band, and Kamil Müller, previously only on guitar and backing vocals, took over as lead singer. Since then, Lorenz “Astl” Schmid has been active as a singer with “Lenze & de Buam.”
The second album Hopaaa! was released on the label südpolrecords, while the albums Bonaparty and Bonaparty live appeared on RCA / Sony Music. The title track Bonaparty features the Finnish band Jaakko Laitinen & Väärä Raha, whom Django 3000 met during their concert tour in Russia in 2015.
The album Im Sturm was released in January 2017, again on südpolrecords and for the first time also on vinyl.
On July 2, 2017, Django 3000 announced via Facebook that they had parted ways with their bassist Michael Unfried Fenzl. He's now active as solo artist FENZL.
In early 2018 they released an unplugged EP with five tracks, which was given free of charge to visitors of the unplugged tour. From that time on, new members Korbinian Kugler (double bass) and Max Schuller (keyboard) also played with the band. Max Schuller left the band at the end of 2019, and since then they have performed again without a keyboardist.
Their song Heidi was selected in autumn 2012 as the theme tune for the new ZDF TV series Die Garmisch-Cops. TV appearances followed, among others on Inas Nacht, the Stadlshow, and in December 2015 on the program Rock the Classic with Wigald Boning.
Over time, the band also built a strong reputation on the festival circuit, performing at events such as Open Air am Berg in Eichstätt, Taubertal Festival, Chiemsee Summer, Open Flair, Montreux Jazz Festival, Donauinselfest, Gampel Open Air, and St. Gallen Open Air.
Since their founding, the band has played around 100 concerts a year in German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Italy). In addition, they regularly tour internationally, for example to Hungary (2012), Denmark (2013), Russia (2014), Finland (2015), South Korea (2015), and India (2016).
Every year in January, the so-called “home concerts” take place in Staudach-Egerndach in the Chiemgau, the hometown of two of the band members, drawing several hundred fans from all over Germany.
In 2021 long time drummer Jan-Philipp Wiesmann left the band. Since then Jojo Vogt has been their drummer for concerts, however the band appears to have turned into a duo consisting of Kamil Müller and Florian R. Starflinger, the only remaining original members.
They are currently signed at Millaphon Records.
