David Pomeranz (born February 9, 1951) is an American singer, songwriter, composer, lyricist, and writer for musical theater. He is an ambassador for Operation Smile, a foundation dedicated to cleft lip and palate, and a member of the Church of Scientology.
Pomeranz was born and raised on Long Island, New York, and showed an early interest in music, singing in synagogue choirs and learning piano, guitar, and drums. By age fourteen, he was writing and recording songs. From October 1968 to January 1969, he was the lead singer for the Ohio-based rock band East Orange Express. At nineteen, he signed a contract with MCA/Decca, releasing the albums "New Blues" and "Time to Fly", the latter featuring Chick Corea. During this period, he toured as the opening act for artists including Rod Stewart, Billy Joel, Three Dog Night, and The Doors.
In the late 1980s, Pomeranz collaborated with Russian rock artist Alexander Malinin on "Faraway Lands", performing in Moscow's Gorky Park for an episode of the television series "Head of the Class", marking the first time an American series filmed there. He also performed the song "Nothing's Gonna Stop Me Now", the theme for the television series "Perfect Strangers". Pomeranz has toured internationally, performing at venues including the Hollywood Bowl, Kennedy Center, Olympic Stadium in Munich, and the Kremlin. He co-wrote "In Our Hands" with David Shire for the United Nations World Summit for Children, which was performed at the closing ceremonies of Ted Turner's Goodwill Games in Seattle. In 1999, he recorded the compilation album "Born for You – His Best and More" in the Philippines, which became the country’s best-selling album of that year. Other recordings include "The Eyes of Christmas" and "On This Day".
As a songwriter, Pomeranz wrote "Tryin' to Get the Feeling Again" and "The Old Songs", both recorded by Barry Manilow, and "It's in Every One of Us", featured in TV specials including "John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together", "Rocky Mountain Holiday", and "A Muppet Family Christmas", the musical "Time", the film "Big", and at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. His compositions have been performed by artists such as Bette Midler, Phoebe Snow, Freddie Mercury, Richie Sambora, Missy Elliott, The Carpenters, Harry Belafonte, Andrea Marcovicci, Donna Summer, Lillias White, The Hollies, and Cliff Richard. His songwriting projects have resulted in twenty-two platinum and eighteen gold albums.
Pomeranz has composed for film, television, and stage. He received a 1981 Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Music and Lyrics for the CBS television movie "Homeward Bound". His stage work includes the West End musical "Time", "Little Tramp", based on the life of Charlie Chaplin, presented at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Festival in 1995 and in concert in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1996, and a musical adaptation of "A Tale of Two Cities" produced by Bill Kenwright in 1998–1999. With Kathie Lee Gifford, he co-wrote "Under the Bridge" (premiered off-Broadway in 2005) and "Saving Aimee", based on the life of evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson, which debuted in 2005 and was staged at the Signature Theatre in 2007. "Saving Aimee" was later renamed "Scandalous" and opened on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre on November 15, 2012.
