Cowlick is the name of at least two artists.
Cowlick is a queer folk pop project in Seattle, WA that began in 2010 when Jane Applesauce was snubbed by a banjo store owner who said she couldn't play music. She returned later that night and stenciled "have a cup of humilitea" at his doorstep and wrote a song called "A is for Anarchy." Common themes running through her songs are mortality, friendship, intimacy, struggle, alienation, environmental destruction, mental health, white privilege, and gender + sexuality. She is sometimes joined by her friends Quinn (euphonium) and Wyatt (banjo). Her music can be found for free at everythingisblue.bandcamp.com. She is also in the riot queer band Bloodsweep, the fantasy folk project Werelight, and a solo pop punk project called Grrlfriend Worship.
Cowlick is also a band that started one day in February 2006 when Dylan Hudecki (formerly of By Divine Right and Junior Blue) and his younger brother Jackson Hudecki (Alive & Living) recorded some improvised bedtracks in a studio in the country.
The 41-minute record “ETERNIA HERNIA” came from the highlights of this 4-hour "lets see where this goes" jam session. The bedtracks quickly turned multi-effort collaboration featuring contributions from the likes of Holy Fuck, By Divine Right, Mia Sheard, Lily Frost, Ryan Granville Martin & family and friends.
"Breakdance I quit" gets the momentum moving as "We Can Do (1979)" which poses as a homage to DFA1979. "Leisure" a electro highlight changes the direction of the disc into an immediate eclectic jem, as does the gentle closer "Eternia".
Drawing upon a kaleidoscope of influences -- pop, folk, psychedelia, hiphop, funk, indie rock, noise rock, experimental & surf, Cowlick has created a body of work with this record that is wildly unpredictable, vibrantly messy, and bursting with ideas.
"Eternia Hernia" produced by Dylan Hudecki (with additional mixing by BDR’s Jose Contreras) is the trophy for the brothers, as it’s a disc two years in the making that now reaches the ears and brains of those experienced.
Released on Down By the Point Records, Eternia Hernia is available on iTunes, Zunior and select record stores.
