Charlie McAlister (Charles Monroe McAlister, Columbia, South Carolina, March 4, 1969 - February 26, 2018) was an American folk singer, songwriter, musician and artist.
Charlie was born in Columbia, SC, and moved with his family to Georgetown, SC, overseas to Athens, Greece, and eventually to Mount Pleasant, SC in 1979. He attended East Cooper School, then Wando High School, where he excelled in art. He attended the Chicago Art Institute and lived in Paris, France, and Los Angeles, CA, among other places. Charlie developed into a prolific artist in all mediums, from painting huge canvases and found objects, to creating sculptures, zines, puppetry, spoken word, video, and particularly in his signature technique of creating music using four-track tape recording to layer found sounds, voices, and instruments into a style that is playful, poetic, and uniquely Charlie. Through his own recording label, he produced a large catalog of works from the early 1980's to the present and collaborated with many other artists from around the world who shared his DIY approach to music. Charlie truly lived his works, and drew from his experiences of exploring the marshes from Winyah Bay to Edisto in his faithful wooden skiff with his friends and family, surfing, oystering, fishing, camping, sailing, and traveling across the country performing.
Catsup Plate released "Mississippi Luau" in 1997 and in 2003 "Death Water Estates", a compilation drawn from four extremely limited cassettes that were originally released in 1994. Read more on Last.fm.
