The members of the Atmos Trio - Rob Michael, Joe Shotwell, and Drew Waters - established the band in 2004, after working with other musical projects in a variety of musical styles. The band's self-description of its music style states that it is "combining singable melodies usually associated with 'pop' music, unexpected harmonic and tonal shifts of moderns jazz and World textures."
