The individual known as Andrea dei Servi is a prominent figure in the history of Medieval music. He is properly known as Andreas de Florentia (or Andrea da Firenze, Andrea di Giovanni) but received the moniker Andrea dei Servi because he was a member of the Servite religious order (Servants of Mary). Here is a short biography based on available information: Period: Late Medieval era (Italian Ars Nova or Trecento style). Died: 1415. Primary Roles: Composer and organist. Religious Order: He entered the Servite order in 1375. Key Representative: Along with Francesco Landini and Paolo da Firenze, he was a leading representative of the Italian Ars Nova style. Career Highlights within the Order: In 1380, he became prior of the Florentine Servite monastery, SS Annunziata. In 1393, he also became prior of the monastery in Pistoia. From 1407 to 1410, he led the entire Servite order in Tuscany (Provincial). Organ Building: He was also involved in organ building and commissioning. He carried out a commission to build an organ for the Servite house in Florence, hiring Francesco Landini as a consultant for the work. In 1387, he received a similar commission to build an organ for Florence Cathedral. Surviving Music: All of his surviving music with reliable attribution is in the genre of the ballata (secular songs), with thirty known works. His music is described as dramatic, restless, and sometimes disjunct, occasionally using sharp dissonances to emphasize text. He is likely portrayed playing an organ in the Squarcialupi Codex, a major source for his work. Read more on Last.fm.
