About Ytpmv

YouTube Poop Music Videos (YTPMVs) are a sample-based remix style which emerged on YouTube in the mid to late 2000s. YTPMVs take source videos and sequence short samples from them into a musical work, either to cover an existing song, or, more rarely, create a new song entirely. Much like the YouTube Poop (YTP) scene which it splintered off of, YTPMVs often maintain a humorous, absurdist, and irreverent approach and frequently sample clips from internet memes and related works with a general disregard for copyright laws.

The sampling style utilized within YTPMVs tends to pull small snippets of audio, usually consisting of only a single percussive impact or melodic note, and sequencing and pitch shifting it up and down as a method of composition. Due to this, individual samples within YTPMVs (particularly those which represent parts other than the lead melody) are often unidentifiable without the accompanying music video, which sets it apart from other adjacent styles of sample-based music like plunderphonics and mashup music. Despite this, YTPMV audio is still occasionally released outside of YouTube via more official means such as Bandcamp or SoundCloud. Read more on Last.fm.
