Barbershop is a sub-group of doo-wop. It is largely associated with african american barbershop culture. The "barbershop" was a cultural nexus for the community and outside and inside the barbershop, young black men would sing together in harmony, hence barbershop groups. Eventually the phenomenon became wide spread and became an act or gig associated with a given barbershop or day of the week.
